Russia is the largest country on Earth. Covering more than 17 million square kilometres, it spans eleven time zones and stretches across both Europe and Asia, encompassing an extraordinary variety of landscapes, from boreal forests and mountain ranges to vast steppes and Arctic wilderness.

The photographs in this category were taken in Siberia, around Lake Baikal, one of the world’s greatest natural treasures. Nearly 25 million years old, Baikal is both the world’s oldest and deepest lake, containing around 20% of the planet’s unfrozen surface freshwater. During winter, its remarkably transparent ice reveals a fascinating world of cracks, trapped methane bubbles and natural ice sculptures, making it one of the most extraordinary destinations for landscape photography.

Russia: The Baïkal lake during winter, frozen pearl of Siberia

Under the Siberian’s winter freezing temperatures, Baïkal lake’s surface is changing into ice several months a year, usually from beginning of January to May. The 1 to 2 meters thick ice, allows people and even cars circulation on it. The following photos have been taken during a frozen lake’s foot crossing. Several aspects of the ice, sun ray’s reverberation on it, the lights playing through the “Toros” are as many photogenic subjects that would make this crossing unforgettable.
