Tajikistan, located in the heart of Central Asia, is one of the world’s most mountainous countries. Nearly 90% of its territory is covered by mountains, many rising above 3,000 metres. Once crossed by ancient trade routes linking Persia, China and the Central Asian steppes, it remains today one of the least-visited destinations in the region.

The photographs featured in this category were taken in the Fann Mountains, one of Tajikistan’s most spectacular mountain ranges. Located in the country’s northwest, the Fann Mountains are renowned for their peaks exceeding 5,000 metres, dramatic valleys and a remarkable collection of glacial lakes whose turquoise waters rank among the most beautiful in Central Asia.

Tajikistan is also famous for the legendary Pamir Highway, one of the highest mountain roads in the world, crossing breathtaking high-altitude landscapes. Mountains dominate every aspect of the country, shaping its scenery, climate and the lives of the people who inhabit these remote regions.
