Samarcande
A millennia-old crossroads of cultures and knowledge, Samarkand remains one of the most precious jewels of Uzbekistan and the ancient Silk Road.
Uzbekistan has occupied a strategic position in the heart of Central Asia for more than two thousand years. Crossed by the great caravan routes linking China, Persia, India and the Mediterranean, it became one of the major crossroads of the legendary Silk Road. This rich past has left behind an extraordinary architectural heritage shaped by Persian, Turkic, Arab and Mongol influences.
Among the country’s historic cities, Samarkand is undoubtedly the most iconic. Founded more than 2,700 years ago, it reached its golden age in the 14th century under Timur (Tamerlane), who made it the capital of his vast empire. Monumental madrasas, turquoise domes, intricate tilework and majestic public squares still bear witness to the city’s remarkable artistic, cultural and scientific achievements.
The photographs gathered in this category were taken mainly in Samarkand. They invite you to discover the unique atmosphere of this legendary city, where every façade, gateway and ceramic decoration tells a chapter of the history of the Silk Road.
