A Rainbow over Victoria Falls – Zimbabwe

Rainbow in the spray in front of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe

A rainbow forms in the spray of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The waters of the Zambezi River plunge into a deep gorge, sending clouds of spray into the air. When sunlight passes through this mist, a rainbow sometimes appears in front of Victoria Falls, creating a fleeting natural spectacle.

Located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria Falls stretches for approximately 1.7 kilometres. The river plunges into a basalt gorge, while spray rises above the waterfall and can be seen from several kilometres away.

As sunlight passes through the fine droplets of water suspended in the air, it separates into different colours, revealing the luminous arc. This phenomenon depends on the position of the sun and the presence of spray. Against the immense power of the falls, the rainbow adds a delicate touch to this spectacular landscape in southern Africa.
