Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country divided between the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo, separated by the South China Sea. This unique geography creates an extraordinary diversity of landscapes, ranging from some of the world’s oldest tropical rainforests to mountains, mangroves, coral reefs and palm-fringed beaches. Some of these forests, particularly those of Borneo, are more than 130 million years old and rank among the oldest remaining rainforest ecosystems on Earth. A historic crossroads of maritime trade between East and West, Malaysia is also a rich cultural mosaic shaped by Malay, Chinese and Indian influences, alongside the many indigenous peoples of Borneo.

The photographs in this category were taken across several regions of the country, from the cool tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands and the modern skyline of Kuala Lumpur, dominated by the iconic Petronas Towers, to the ancient rainforests of Borneo, where emblematic wildlife such as orangutans, proboscis monkeys and rhinoceros hornbills still thrive. Beneath the surface, Malaysia’s coral reefs are equally rich in marine life, making the country a renowned destination for underwater photography.
